A Very Special Christmas |
| The first Christmas Rick and I spent together started cold and windy. By
the time we walked to the church for Midnight Mass, the snow was coming down in big fluffy flakes. We emerged from the church two hours later to a winter wonderland scene fit for a snow globe. Rick reached over and took my hand. "Let's go for a little walk," he said. He led me to a place farther up the hill where we could see most of the city. Then he stopped and reached into his pocket and I reached into mine. We both pulled out rings. When he opened the box he held, I had to swallow to get the lump out of my throat. It was a black fire opal in a delicate gold setting. I slipped a ring of intertwining gold, silver and copper on his finger. "This is a promise ring," I said, "Since forever is such a long time, I promise to love you for a year and a day. When that time comes we'll see if we still feel the same. But we'll always be friends no matter what." "No matter what," he agreed, giving me the ring he had brought. That was seventeen years ago. The rings are showing the years and so are we, but we're still together. And we're still the best of friends. No matter what. |
